Learning Difficulties and Addiction on the Internet: The Case of a Student with ADHD in Junior High School

Maria Drossinou Korea and Athanasia Manikioti

DOI: 10.15604/ejss.2019.07.02.001

Abstract

The paper studies the bibliography of the specific reading difficulties in language courses and behavioral problems, with an emphasis on internet reliance in a case study of student in junior high school, who has diagnosed with Attention Deficit Disorder with or without Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD). The “addiction” is recorded with excessive use of computer, neglect of individual study of lessons, school sub-performances, and inter-family conflicts. The assumptions investigated whether the philologist, who in our case is the sister of the student, is able to understand the difficulties in perceptual reading and dependency problems. It has also been investigated whether she can interfere with the Targeted Individual Structured and Integrated Program for Students with Special Educational needs (TISIPFSEN) by reading texts through the mobile phone. The results showed that the philologist could understand the reading difficulties. Finally, it showed that she could intervene by turning the negative uses of the internet into positive ones, making the mobile an auxiliary pedagogical teaching tool to a certain language course.

Financial Literacy – What and Why Should We Improve

Sirli Mändmaa

DOI: 10.15604/ejss.2019.07.02.002

Abstract

Financial literacy has become a necessary skill for life and employment. This paper aims to introduce the research findings from a survey conducted in higher education institutions. 522 students participated in the poll. The main goal of this study was to analyze the financial literacy of students in Estonia. The standardized survey method of data collection was used and logit regression model was chosen to examine the impact of financial and non-financial variables on the financial literacy of respondents. The survey revealed that financial literacy of students is affected by gender, nationality, age and academic discipline. However, the level of education the students pursue, the work experience of the students and the level of education of the parents does not affect the level of financial literacy. The main conclusions of this study were that students’ financial literacy level in Estonia was low and students’ interest for long-term planning was not very high. 51% of the respondents had low level of financial literacy, only 3.4% plan their financial affairs in advance on a several years basis and 55.9% have considered retirement funding. These results have important implication for policy makers and further researchers to develop better strategies for financial education.

The Emergence of Global Companies in the High-Tech Industry of Defense: The Case of Indra in Spain, 1993-2007

Angel Calvo

DOI: 10.15604/ejss.2019.07.02.003

Abstract

This article analyzes the intricacies of the creation and early evolution of a Spanish high-tech company in the defense sector –Indra- and the involvement of diverse actors in the context of an increasing globalization. The study tests if the State worked as a shield behind which Indra withdrew as a shareholder and buyer or if market criteria were met. The text is structured in four main sections, which respond to the primordial stages of Indra. The first refers to the birth, the second to the restructuring, reorganization and consolidation of the company in the period 1993-1998 and the third to the subsequent growth, while the last deals with the internationalization, one of the distinguishing aspects of the period of Indra. The research is based on sources of diverse nature and provenance, mainly those of the company, as well as in newspaper archive material and in an extensive specialized bibliography. The study concludes that the keys to Indra’s success lie in its commitment to investment, its restructuring and its external expansion, heavily backed by the State.

Redefining Natural Resources in Economic Research

Ahmed Badreldin

DOI: 10.15604/ejss.2019.07.02.004

Abstract

Natural resources and their rents have become critical as explanatory factors in economic research, most popularly with measures made available by the World Bank. However, the used definition of natural resources seems to miss out on the two natural resources: water and fertile land. This paper argues the importance of these two natural resources, with an emphasis made on the natural resource “land”. The paper argues how land could be seen as a natural resource yielding economic rents through “real-estate land”, “land as energy” and “land in conflict”. It then shows how the calculation of population density can be improved upon by using improved measures of land instead. This is applied to a world sample and shows how the original measure of population density can be misleading if a deeper understanding of usable land is not employed. The disparity in population density measures is most severe in island nations and MENA (Middle East and North Africa) countries. As a result of this paper, we recommend that researchers and policy makers be more aware of what passes as natural resources and natural resource rents, and to integrate a more accurate measurement of the latter into their empirical models.
